Tell a story, build community, do business

Clay Shirky provides an excellent overview and points exactly to what is taking place in some worldwide social media access today; the closing down of public voices in China and Iran.
This is also true to a degree when you look or compare this avenue here in the U.S., specifically with AT&T's U-Verse platform, moving PEG Access channels to the digital tier Ch.99 where it takes over three minutes to load local community, education and government programming and alternative voices to your TV when just a year ago it was as instant as changing the channel. Today's PEG cable access stations are the local television stations of old now updated within the latest digital technology and broadband access platforms. PEG access offers a valuable communication tool for localities, and commercial opportunities for local content creators, but only if access remains available and affordable. Local videographers looking to expand their productions and stories, neighborhood nonprofit organizations that couldn't get their message across and out to a wider audience without public access or the educational connectivity for many more local institutions all succeed when public broadband is assured.
Clay is so correct in his comments that " media transformation has taken place through amateur sources" all over the world by supporting groups. It is supported right here in King County through King County Community Forums which have begun a dialog using cable television, public broadcasting, and website distribution. This kind of local community activity needs to continue and become even more interactively robust. Thanks to the likes of a Clay Shirky lecture, this perspective is exposed to many more.
