Tell a story, build community, do business

Olympia, our state capital. The Olympian, a McClatchy Newspaper, has begun including video reporting and archiving which rivals, in my estimation, many other daily newspapers. I believe this activity can be attributed to the fact that the Olympian has always covered the Washington State legislature and from a recent visit to their website, has closely monitored the video of TVWashington. TVW, the state's own cable and Internet legislative channel, has continuously provided gavel-to-gavel legislative and Supreme Court coverage along with creative special productions for over fifteen years. The Olympian newspaper has obviously keyed into this local coverage with their own use of "video reporting ". Some web video stories are variations to their normal daily reporting, but the Olympian has ventured into the production and archiving of more short length videos which have a noted production and storytelling quality. The website is constructed with an easy ability to reach related news videos and the video based archive is updated regularly. One highlighted video story follows the famous annual Procession of the Species Parade through downtown Olympia and should be a must see for anyone wanting to understand what this unique culturally significant event is all about. What a fine local effort this daily newspaper produces in web video.
